Google has a new technique to fight bots
NEW DELHI: Google has introduced reCAPTCHA v3 that aims to ease the process of differentiating between actual users and bots. The newly introduced reCAPTCHA API gives a score between 0.0 and 1.0 to rank a user’s interaction with the website. 1.0 is very likely a good interaction, 0.0 is very likely a bot. Based on the score, one can take suitable action in the context of his/her site.

CAPTCHAs are the most commonly used digital tools to identify between a human and a bot user. The most popular version of this test involves asking a user to type in visually distorted texts to ensure identity. The other version includes identifying objects in given images.

Announcing the latest version of the reCAPTCHAs, the California-based company said “Over the last decade, reCAPTCHA has continuously evolved its technology. In reCAPTCHA v1, every user was asked to pass a challenge by reading distorted text and typing into a box. To improve both user experience and security, we introduced reCAPTCHA v2 and began to use many other signals to determine whether a request came from a human or bot. This enabled reCAPTCHA challenges to move from a dominant to a secondary role in detecting abuse, letting about half of users pass with a single click.”

How the new version works

The new API introduces a three step method to fight spams. First is setting a threshold that decides to either let through the user or need for further verification like using two-factor authentication. Next is to combine the API scores with user information like profile and transaction history. The third and final step involves using reCAPTCHA score to train machine learning to fight spams and abuses.

The new version places reCAPTCHA on more web pages and not just login box. The system works by seeing real traffic on a site. It runs adaptive risk analysis in the background, thus taking action behind the scenes instead of just blocking traffic to protect the website.

Also, reCAPTCHA v3 does not interrupt the user flow. A website owner may run reCAPTCHA without taking immediate action. He/she may later decide on thresholds by looking at your traffic in the admin console which usually is 0.5 by default.
